Sensei Russ is a 2nd Dan black belt in Kimura Shukokai Karate and a senior instructor at Samurai Dojo. His martial arts journey began in 1980 at Samurai Dojo in Cape Town, South Africa, where he had the privilege of training directly under Shihan Chris Thompson — a connection that continues to shape his approach to karate today.

After relocating to Australia, Russ continued his development through Muay Thai and Dutch-style Kickboxing, maintaining his commitment to disciplined, high-level training even without access to a Shukokai dojo.

In 2020, he joined Samurai Dojo in Thirroul, reconnecting with his Shukokai roots and quickly becoming an integral part of the teaching team. Known for his calm focus, technical insight, and dedication to student progression, Russ brings a wealth of knowledge and life experience to the dojo floor.

He supports students across all levels with clear instruction, practical wisdom, and a deep respect for the traditions of Kimura Shukokai Karate.
